- Everything you ever wanted to know about the monitoring of sports betting by GLMS, the Global Lottery Monitoring System, set up in 2015 by the World Lottery Association (WLA) and European Lotteries (EL).
Lotteries worldwide experienced a generally positive start to 2016. First-quarter on first-quarter sales were up sharply in North America, thanks mostly to the record-breaking Powerball draw of January 2016, and were also up moderately in Europe. However, these results were offset by a contraction in sales in the Asia Pacific region. Overall, first-quarter on first-quarter sales grew by 3.1% globally.
FY on FY global growth up 2%; Latin America, North America up; Asia Pacific down; Europe holds steady.
In 2015, full-year on full-year global lottery sales grew 2%, moderating sharply from 2014 full-year on full-year sales growth of 9.9%. Strong growth in the Americas over the whole year 2015 was offset by a contraction in sales in the Asia Pacific region over the second half of 2015, with the result that annual growth in global lottery sales is now at its lowest point in five years, as the attendant graph (right and below) shows.
