The European Lotteries Association (EL) and the World Lottery Association (WLA), upon invitation of the IOC President, Thomas Bach, participated on Wednesday in the 2nd IOC International Forum on Sports Integrity (IFSI), organised in Lausanne. Lotteries joined a wide range of stakeholders from the sports movement, governments, the Council of Europe, the EU and the UN, who flocked to Lausanne on this occasion and had the chance to discuss issues related to match-fixing and good governance in sport.
In 2016, full-year on full-year sales grew by 4% globally, doubling the 2% full-year on full-year increase in worldwide sales reported in 2015. Solid performances in the North American and Asia Pacific markets, which reported growth slightly above the global average, provided the foundations for the 2016 end-of-year results. In other markets, burgeoning sales in Africa were offset by a contraction in sales in Latin America. Overall, the 4% year-on-year increase in worldwide sales was a little below five-year average global growth of 5.7%, as the attendant graph (right and below) indicates.
Edging up from a half-year on half-year increase in sales of 4.5%, lotteries around the world continued to gain momentum in the third quarter of 2016, resulting in an aggregate increase in sales of 4.9% for the period January–September 2016, as against January–September 2015. Nine-month on nine-month sales were up sharply in Africa, and were also up in North America, Asia Pacific, and Europe. Sales in Latin America held steady.
