2010-02-04

PROVIDENCE MAYOR David N. Cicilline, front left, and GTECH Regional Vice President Jay Gendron, front right, watch a student work with one of the new computers in the After School Advantage Lab at the Mt. Pleasant Library, as Councilman John J. Lombardi, back left, talks with a library patron.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Mt. Pleasant branch of the Providence Community Library to unveil one of three new After School Advantage computer labs donated by GTECH Corp.

The new $15,000 computer lab features eight flat-panel computers, a digital printer, educational software, Internet access and new furniture and wiring. The donation is part of GTECH’s nationwide program to provide educational resources to communities where GTECH does business.

“The Mt. Pleasant Library has been a center of exploration and learning for generations of neighborhood children and families,” said Providence City Councilman Michael Solomon. “The GTECH After School Advantage computer lab will help the library continue its legacy by providing new technology for young people to reach their goals.”

A similar After School Advantage computer lab was unveiled at the Wanskuck Community Library; a third lab will be opened at the Fox Point branch in the coming months.
