2009: Française des Jeux, the second-largest lottery in the world

2010-01-19

ImageOn 7 January 2010, Christophe Blanchard-Dignac, Chairman and CEO of Française des Jeux, presented the company 2009 activity results to the Board of Directors.

Stakes reached nearly 10 billion euros (€9.997 billion), up from €9.2 billion in 2008 (+8.6%) and €9.5 billion in 2006. Française des Jeux moved up from the third-largest to the second-largest lottery in Europe and the world.

2009 saw a progressive upturn in sales following the improvement in the French economy, with a marked rise at the end of the year. In this context, the overhaul and innovation work applied to all product ranges over the last two years was profitable. It should also be noted that the 2009 calendar was exceptional in containing especially three “Friday the 13ths” (compared with one in 2008), which generated additional sales of nearly €200 million.

2009: over 800 million prizes

28.2 million French people, including 8.4 million regular players, staked an average of just under €1 per day (€6.70 per week). They continued to benefit from the increase in the Prize Payout to players. The Prize Payout to Players now stands at 63.1% (73.6% for betting).

Française des Jeux paid out approximately 800 million prizes of between €1 and €100 million. 113 new millionaires (≥ €1 million) were created, making an average of two every week. There was an average of one new multi-millionaire (≥ €5 million) every fortnight and one big winner (≥ €10 million) every month.

2009 saw a record €100 million winning on Euro Millions, awarded on 18 September to a group of 15 players, and a record €19 million winning on Loto on 2 May. On 31 December, in the last Keno draw, one player won a record €10 million.

Lottery games: success for the new Loto and Cash

Lottery games, which represent the core of the business, recorded stakes of €9,214 million in 2009, up by 7.5% compared with 2008.

The new Loto: 16% of the year’s stakes

New Loto sales were up by 11.4% at €1,618 million, boosting the range of draw-based games by 5.1%. The game has fulfilled expectations: it has attracted 15 million French people, including one million new players (+15%). The number of winning grids was up by 35% (134 million), and the new Monday draw proved popular (21% of sales).

A new generation of scratch games

With 21.8 million players, 36,600 points of sale and 1.8 billion tickets sold in 2009, scratch games are the most popular among all games.

The range has seen new growth (+16.9%) with revenues of €3,879 million, representing nearly 39% of sales. However, the different product families showed balanced results. The core games (Millionnaire, Solitaire, Astro, Vegas, etc.) were up by 6%, benefiting from the overhauls made in 2008, while complementary and temporary games suffered a 15% fall.

The key feature of the year was the launch of a new generation of games -both simple and attractive- that have proven to be highly appreciated. The launch of Cash €500,000 generated sales of 133 million tickets in 9 months (€663 million).

Point of sale games

Rapido continued to see declining sales (-5.3% at €1,702 million) following the introduction of the smoking ban and measures taken to strengthen responsible gaming.

Sports betting: Preparing for the opening of the market

After growth of 65% in 2008, sports betting games have continued to expand, rising by 24% in 2009 to €783 million (including €630 million for fixed-odds betting). Within this range, which now accounts for 8% of Française des Jeux’s gaming revenues, and faced with very strong competition from illegal remote gambling, online betting grew by 61% to €43 million in stakes.

These results are based on the modernisation of the product offer. In November, the company launched ParionsSport, a new sports betting range in its network of 24,000 points of sale, alongside ParionsWeb, a new betting website.

Distribution: priority for proximity

In 2009, Française des Jeux products were distributed via a uniquely extensive local network that accounted for 96.8% of sales. There are now 36,600 points of sale, including 20,000 for Loto (+800).

2009 was marked by completion of the deployment of 25,000 self-service ticket checkers and the signature of an agreement with Sagem Sécurité for the supply of new-generation gaming terminals, with the aim of equipping the entire network by the end of 2013.

Sales made via the multimedia channel rose by 44% to €315 million, accounting for 3.2% of stakes. The Fdjeux.com website is the leading gaming site for the general public in France, with 935,000 active players (+28%, representing 200,000 more players than in 2008), as well as being the leading gaming site in terms of customer satisfaction (source: Harris Interactive 2009 survey).
